Meta threatens to block use of its platforms in New Mexico after child safety court case

Meta was hit with a major lawsuit in New Mexico after a jury found the company violated state law over how it handled child safety on Facebook and Instagram. The case, brought by New Mexico Attorney General Raúl Torrez in 2023, showed that Meta misled users about how safe its platforms were while failing to protect children from exploitation, harmful content, and predatory behavior.
During the trial, evidence was presented that Meta’s systems and recommendations could expose minors to dangerous and harmful interactions, while the company argued it already works to remove harmful content and cannot eliminate every risk. The jury ruled against Meta and ordered it to pay $375 million, becoming one of the most significant state-level actions against a social media company over child safety.
