A rare human to human hantavirus strain has been discovered and has infected at least six people

This event is currently ongoing as of 5/8/2026. The information may not be accurate.
A rare hantavirus outbreak on a cruise ship killed three people and left one passenger critically ill. The ship was traveling through the South Atlantic when several people on board began getting sick.
Hantavirus usually spreads through contact with infected rodents. However, this strain was able to spread from human to human. Health officials are still trying to figure out exactly how the virus spread.
Doctors and health teams isolated sick passengers, tested samples, and traced close contacts. The World Health Organization says the overall risk to the public is low.
